Sierra Sur Austin Review: A South Austin Taco Truck Worth an Early Start

November 2, 2026 · By The Fam Food Fun family

Four tacos from Sierra Sur on a painted clay plate: two grilled chicken tacos with queso fresco and two shredded beef tacos with purple cabbage and radish

Some of the best meals on a trip are the ones you almost drive past. On Saturday morning, October 31, 2026, during our Austin weekend, we pulled into a gravel lot on Menchaca Road in South Austin and sat down at a picnic table next to a bright red food truck called Sierra Sur. By 9:30 we had a plate of tacos in front of us.

Sierra Sur bills itself as South Austin's spot for bold Mexican flavors and generous portions. It covers a lot of ground for a truck: breakfast tacos, street tacos, birria, plates, quesadillas, pozole and aguas frescas. The hand-painted sign out front says it more bluntly, and we will let you translate that one yourself.

What was on our plate

Our plate came out with four tacos on corn tortillas, served on a painted clay plate set on a woven placemat. That detail matters more than you would think. It turns a picnic table in a parking lot into something that feels like a meal, not a snack in a paper boat.

  • Two grilled chicken tacos: chopped, well-browned chicken with diced onion, cilantro and a heavy snowfall of crumbled queso fresco, which matches the Grilled Chicken Taco on the menu.
  • Two shredded beef tacos: dark, tender-looking shredded beef piled high with purple cabbage and thin slices of radish.
  • Plenty of lime wedges and two salsa cups on the side, one red and one green.

The menu, in short

The board is split into breakfast tacos, regular tacos, seafood tacos, vegetarian tacos and quesadillas, and the online menu adds plates, birria, pozole and drinks. A few that caught our eye for next time:

  • Breakfast tacos: the Migas Taco (eggs, tomato, onion, cilantro, tortilla chips and Monterey Jack), the Diablito with eggs and chorizo, and the Popeyes Taco with eggs and spinach.
  • Street tacos: pastor with pineapple, grilled chicken, grilled steak, barbacoa and a queso birria taco with melted Monterey Jack.
  • Seafood: a shrimp taco in chipotle sauce and a grilled or fried fish taco, both with cabbage, pico de mango and avocado.
  • Vegetarian: El Sano, with grilled mushroom, potato, spinach and refried beans.
  • Bigger appetites: chilaquiles verdes, a migas plate, chicken flautas, nachos and a birria combo.

Prices on the online menu are friendly for a family: most tacos sit between $3.25 and $5.25, so you can order a spread and let everyone try a bit of everything. Menus and prices change, so treat those numbers as a guide.

Why it works with kids

A taco truck is about as low-stakes as family dining gets. There is no wait for a table, no one minds a little noise and the kids can stretch their legs between bites. The seating at Sierra Sur is outdoors at picnic tables, so it is best on a mild morning. Bean and cheese tacos and a kids quesadilla are on the menu for picky eaters, and the salsa comes on the side, so the spice level is up to you.

It is also an early opener. Breakfast tacos from 8am make it an easy first stop before a day out.

What we loved

  • Tacos plated on painted clay dishes, even at a picnic table.
  • Generous toppings: a real pile of queso fresco, cabbage and radish.
  • Salsa on the side and plenty of limes.
  • A big menu for a truck, from breakfast tacos to birria and pozole.
  • Open early, which suits a family on a travel schedule.

Tips if you go

  • Check the hours first. Different listings show different hours, and it is closed on Mondays.
  • Order ahead on Toast if you are feeding a crowd or short on time.
  • Seating is outdoors on gravel, so bring sunscreen in summer and a jacket on a cool morning.
  • Order a mix of tacos and share. At these prices it is the easiest way to find a favorite.

Our verdict

Sierra Sur is the kind of neighborhood taco truck that makes a trip feel local. Go early, grab a picnic table and order a plate to share.
